Review of Nav's Latest Work, "Perfect Timing"

By Andreas Fanos on July 26, 2017

Nav is a rapper from Toronto, Canada, who has been gaining a lot of ground in the music industry, specifically in rap. He takes pride as he talks of being ‘a brown boy’ who made it in the rap genre.

Over time he has improved and he has a keen sense or gift for making beats. Nav’s beats are some of the best around; they are very polished and have a significant style. He has also worked with some of the best producers in the rap game, such as Atlanta giant Metro Boomin on his latest work “Perfect Timing.” The Atlanta producer is known as one of the best in the game and the two have developed a connection or chemistry on their latest project.

The project falls into some of the same weaknesses that he has had in the past, but it is not to say that it is not a good project. Nav has recruited some of the best rappers on his latest work. In my opinion, it is better than his previous work. Notable names on “Perfect Timing” include Lil Uzi Vert, Gucci Mane, and 21 Savage, followed by others. The rapper has managed to recruit some good artists that fit well into the work of art.

There are a bunch of highlight songs on the project, like opener ”Perfect Timing (Intro),” “Hit,” “A$AP Ferg,” “Minute,” “Both Sides,” “Rich,” and “Navuzimetro#, Pt. 2.”

The production on the project is well done from producer Metro Boomin, but Nav also co-produced it. His ear for production is uncanny and melodic at best.

The work hits on some of the same themes as his past self-titled debut album. “Perfect Timing” hits on the spoils of fame and despair/loneliness. The work hits on the themes of having a lot of money, but it not exactly equating this to happiness. It seldom mentions his rise from being poor to becoming rich and well-known. Nav could have put some kind of redemptive story in the work or more on his story, but it goes instead to mention his frequent drug use, drinking, and showboating.

The audience or listeners do not get to know him on more of a personal level. Typical showboating includes getting girls, money, and being able to do more than he could ever before. He sings his heart out about girls that he really liked not calling him or talking to him anymore. He points out the problems of being famous, women wanting him just for his money and nothing else.

Although, the rapper has made strides in his voice, what he makes up for not rapping well he does in his nice melodic tone and inflective ad-libs. He is able to make some nice rhymes, but nothing too crazy; he is not that kind of rapper. Some of the same weaknesses that the artist suffers from appear on this work, despite his improvements.

Going back in time, his self-titled work was not bad by any means either. He managed to turn heads with a number of plays on his SoundCloud account and great songs on it that he produced himself. He produced the album himself and a lot of the beats were great, fitting with one another, the same as his latest work.

His hit song “Myself” told a redemptive and confident story, proving people wrong and overcoming obstacles. The self-titled work also brought some decent rapping with his significant catchy lyrics and auto-tuned voice. His voice is very soft spoken and it works to his advantage. The artist is by no means a one hit wonder.

People should be aware of other great albums that have been released this past week alone. Lana Del Rey dropped her album “Lust for Life” with good features. Angry rapper Meek Mill also released his album, “Wins & Losses,” that has gotten good reviews. Another rapper, Tyler, The Creator dropped his sentimental album “Flower Boy.”

So, there is an array and diverse set of great music that is out currently on the market to listen too, besides Nav’s new work. However, Nav will not be going anywhere and the Weeknd protégé seems to just be getting started.
